5 Simple Habits to Keep Your Home Organized


Organizing your home is not a one-time task. It takes consistent effort to maintain and adapt as your life changes. No organization system will work for you forever, and so it's important to understand the fundamentals of how to organize so you can easily adapt.

Luckily, keeping your home organized only requires you to learn a few simple habits. So if you’re ready to finally achieve the decluttered home of your dreams, read on!


1. Put things back where they belong.

Yeah, I know. You've heard this one before. But one item in the wrong place becomes two, then six, then twelve. Before you know it you’re overwhelmed with clutter and wondering how it got so messy! Put things away in the right spot EVERY TIME. You’ll thank yourself later.



2. Keep like items together.

Unless you have a mansion of a house, keep everything of one category together. For example, keep all your batteries in one box, in one area of the house. Do NOT keep some batteries in the garage and some in the junk drawer and some in the kitchen. Get them all in one place so there is only one definitive place to look for batteries. Do this with cooking tools, gardening equipment, electronic cables and anything else that may have multiple homes.


3. Identify homeless clutter.

Figure out what items in your home don’t have a designated spot to go. Where do your keys go? Outgoing mail? Summer shoes? Give them a proper place to 'live' and put them back in the same spot every time.


4. Declutter routinely.

Donating and tossing items that you don’t need anymore should be a near daily habit for organized people. Any time you come across an item that you don’t need or want – get rid of it right then and there.


Tip: always have a box labeled "donate" to keep donations in until it's full and ready to go.


5. The magic rule.

You would be amazed how many things take less than 2 minutes to do. Empty the dishwasher, make the bed, take out the trash, put away papers, clear the counter, etc. Live by this rule and your home will look amazing!
